Barbara Smith on David Gilbert's "Love and Struggle"

Barbara Smith reads a selection from "Love and Struggle," during the event "Weather Underground Meets Occupy Wall Street" on March 3, 2012 at The Sanctuary for Independent Media in Troy, NY. David Gilbert's new book, "Love and Struggle: My Life in SDS, the Weather Underground, and Beyond," sparks a dialogue about what social justice movements can learn from each other. Currently serving a 75 year to life sentence in the New York State prison system, Gilbert chose a political path--an Eagle Scout turned member of the Weather Underground. In other segments, a panel of today's young activists will talk with '60s revolutionaries about their common struggles, grounded by critical exchange and self-reflection. Panelists include Naomi Jaffe, Barbara Smith, Jeff Jones, Dan Lyles, Laura Travison, Victorio Reyes and special guest Larry White, co-founder of The New Jim Crow Movement to End Mass Incarceration. www.mediasanctuary.org

Sean Hemmerle at the Sanctuary

Artist talk about "Media Nodes" by photographer Sean Hemmerle recorded in the Underground Gallery at The Sanctuary for Independent Media in Troy, NY on Saturday, November 5, 2011.

Award-winning photographer Sean Hemmerle, in collaboration with the Columbia Journalism Review, took his camera into newsrooms around the country. "People throw around this word all the time, mostly disparagingly: 'oh, the media,' and 'media spin," he says. "That made me think: who is the media? And what about the media? I wanted to put a face on these media nodes, the places where news is 'made.'"

"King Story" Bread and Puppet Theater

Bread and Puppet Theater celebrated their 50th anniversary with a special performance at The Sanctuary for Independent Media on Thursday October 17th, 2013. Their show included "King Story," an early anti-war piece which was originally performed in 1967, One of the longest-lived theatrical companies in the country put on an amazing puppet performance!

Founded in 1963 by Peter Schumann, Bread and Puppet Theater originally tackled concerns of rent, rats, and living conditions of the neighborhoods of the Lower East Side of New York City. Today, productions have developed into more complex theater pieces, integrating music, dance, and more.

In 1974, Bread and Puppet Theater decided to pack up and move from the city to a farm in Glover in Northeastern Vermont. Bread and Puppet Theater has a wholesome and powerful language that can capture anyone's attention--a great form of entertainment for adults and children alike. Bread and Puppet Theater is a necessity; just as bread is food for your stomach, theater is food for your soul. www.breadandpuppet.org www.mediasanctuary.org
