"Dollarocracy" with John Nichols

John Nichols discussed issues raised by the new book co-authored with Bob McChesney, "Dollarocracy: How the Money and Media Election Complex is Destroying America," at The Sanctuary for Independent Media on September 29th, 2013.

Their new book, published by Nation Books, describes how money spent on campaigns defines our country's politics and ultimately may trigger the end of democracy in America. The two were on a two-month tour, stopping in Troy, NY along with another 24 cities in America to speak about their newest text.

Blending vivid reports from the 2012 campaign trail and deep perspective from decades covering American and international media and politics, political journalist John Nichols and media critic Robert W. McChesney explain how the United States elections are becoming controlled, predictable enterprises that are managed by a new class of consultants who wield millions of dollars and define our politics as never before.

"M.N.D. (Music Never Dies)" M.A.K.U. Sound System live at Freedom Square

www.mediasanctuary.org

Recorded live at Freedom Square in Troy NY

M.A.K.U Sound System is a New York-based Colombian band playing music that is traditional at its core, but with a futuristic spin that is distinct. Basing their rhythmic foundation on Colombian folkloric music, the band diverts from tradition by inflecting their sound with decidedly more modern synthesizers, and musical influences ranging from jazz, psychedelic rock, punk, afro-beat, reggae, and soul. This 8-musician ensemble was born in Queens in 2009 and uses an array of instruments in heavy rotation on stage and in the studio, including drums, Colombian drums, guitar, bass, vocals, horn, clarinet, trombone, traditional Colombian percussion instruments such as maracas and gaitas (large indigenous flutes), and synthesizers--to name but a few. Most of the band members are Colombian immigrants who currently live, work, and play in New York City. Each of the musicians, regardless of origin, adds in his/her own interpretations and experiences to every M.A.K.U. song, both musically and lyrically, contributing to that indefinable quality in their songs that can only be defined as M.A.K.U.!

M.A.K.U. Sound System is:

Juan Ospina, lead vocals + bass
Camilo Rodriguez, guitar
Liliana Conde, lead vocals + percussion
Andrés Jimenez, drums
Felipe Quiroz, synthesizer
Robert Stringer, trombone
Isaiah Richardson Jr., saxophone + clarinet
Moris Cañante, alegre

Sax Soup Poetry & Voice - H(i)M

"H(i)M," by Sax, Soup, Poetry and Voice with Nicole Peyrafitte (vocals, cooking), Pierre Joris (poetry), and Joe Giardullo (saxophone), recorded live on November 10, 2007 at The Sanctuary for Independent Media in Troy, NY.

A "melange" performance in three parts: to see, hear, smell, wonder and taste! The trio celebrates and harvests non-linear momentum through music, poetry, voice, multi-media performance and yes, an Inner-State soup, drawing on an eclectic heritage to perform works based on transcontinental experiences, a tasty and imaginative broth. Videos, paintings, texts, music, and movements blend into a "Bi-Continental Chowder!"

This production is part of "Free Jazz at the Sanctuary," a 13-part series of jazz performance videos featuring some of the world's most talented improvisers performing a wide spectrum of music in the genre broadly known as free jazz.

Each hour-long show is available on DVD directly from Downtown Music Gallery
