"Dollarocracy" with John Nichols

John Nichols discussed issues raised by the new book co-authored with Bob McChesney, "Dollarocracy: How the Money and Media Election Complex is Destroying America," at The Sanctuary for Independent Media on September 29th, 2013.

Their new book, published by Nation Books, describes how money spent on campaigns defines our country's politics and ultimately may trigger the end of democracy in America. The two were on a two-month tour, stopping in Troy, NY along with another 24 cities in America to speak about their newest text.

Blending vivid reports from the 2012 campaign trail and deep perspective from decades covering American and international media and politics, political journalist John Nichols and media critic Robert W. McChesney explain how the United States elections are becoming controlled, predictable enterprises that are managed by a new class of consultants who wield millions of dollars and define our politics as never before.

"Let The Fire Burn" Q&A with filmmaker Jason Osder

Filmmaker Jason Osder showed his epic documentary "Let The Fire Burn" on November 22, 2013 at The Sanctuary for Independent Media in Troy NY and answered audience questions in this post-screening discussion.

The film tells the chilling story of the Philadelphia police decision to drop a bomb on the radical back-to-nature group MOVE in 1985, leading to deaths of 11 people (including five children) and the destruction of an entire neighborhood. In this astonishingly gripping documentary, director Jason Osder has crafted that rarest of cinematic objects: a found-footage film that unfurls with the tension of a great thriller.

Jeremy Scahill "How Do You Surrender To A Drone?"

www.mediasanctuary.org

Journalist Jeremy Scahill spoke at The Sanctuary for Independent Media in Troy NY on May 22, 2013 on the eve of President Obama's address on drone policy, just after Attorney General Eric H. Holder Jr. wrote a letter to members of Congress acknowledging the deaths of four Americans, including Anwar al-Awlaki, in counterterrorism strikes "outside of areas of active hostilities." Though these strikes had long been the subject of press reports about the administration's use of drones, the letter marks the first time the classified operations have been publicly acknowledged.

Just as in his new book "Dirty Wars: The World Is a Battlefield," Jeremy Scahill, author of the New York Times bestseller "Blackwater: The World's Most Powerful Mercenary Army," takes us inside America's new covert wars. He describes how the foot soldiers in these battles operate globally and inside the United States with orders from the White House to do whatever is necessary to hunt down, capture, or kill individuals designated by the president as enemies.

Milk Not Jails Powerpoint

Milk Not Jails performs at the book launch for "Maroon the Implacable" by political prisoner Russell Maroon Shoatz on March 22, 2013 at The Sanctuary for Independent Media in Troy NY. It was the opening night of a convergence called "Changing the Climate: (r)Evolution for social and environmental justice" organized by Ecosocialist Horizons. During the prison construction boom of the 1980s and 1990s, many economically depressed, rural towns hoped that prisons would jump start their local economies. New York's prison population has tripled since 1980 and a disproportionate number of those incarcerated are black and Latino folks from just a few New York City neighborhoods. Milk Not Jails is an economic alternative to the prison industry. They are a dairy marketing and distribution co-operative and they are a political campaign building an alliance for a sustainable and just regional economy. Milk Not Jails is building a regional economy that depends on bringing city residents local, healthy food, not locking them up. milknotjails.wordpress.com ecosocialisthorizons.com mediasanctuary.org
