"Dollarocracy" with John Nichols

John Nichols discussed issues raised by the new book co-authored with Bob McChesney, "Dollarocracy: How the Money and Media Election Complex is Destroying America," at The Sanctuary for Independent Media on September 29th, 2013.

Their new book, published by Nation Books, describes how money spent on campaigns defines our country's politics and ultimately may trigger the end of democracy in America. The two were on a two-month tour, stopping in Troy, NY along with another 24 cities in America to speak about their newest text.

Blending vivid reports from the 2012 campaign trail and deep perspective from decades covering American and international media and politics, political journalist John Nichols and media critic Robert W. McChesney explain how the United States elections are becoming controlled, predictable enterprises that are managed by a new class of consultants who wield millions of dollars and define our politics as never before.

"Let The Fire Burn" Q&A with filmmaker Jason Osder

Filmmaker Jason Osder showed his epic documentary "Let The Fire Burn" on November 22, 2013 at The Sanctuary for Independent Media in Troy NY and answered audience questions in this post-screening discussion.

The film tells the chilling story of the Philadelphia police decision to drop a bomb on the radical back-to-nature group MOVE in 1985, leading to deaths of 11 people (including five children) and the destruction of an entire neighborhood. In this astonishingly gripping documentary, director Jason Osder has crafted that rarest of cinematic objects: a found-footage film that unfurls with the tension of a great thriller.

Imarhan "Aicha Biba"

Mali's "Festival in the Desert" Caravan for Peace tour came to Freedom Square in North Troy, NY on July 26, 2013. The Caravan shines a light on two of Mali's greatest contributions to the world's music: the Tuareg sounds and Malian blues, both revealing the deep and gritty roots, and the striking skill and musicianship of Mali's beleaguered artists.

Tartit/Imharhan transform from a very traditional mixed female/male ensemble—where voices, small hand drums (tinde), and stringed instruments form the basis for trance-inducing songs—to a band that reflects the often experimental, fascinating Tuareg adaptation of Saharan nomad music to contemporary, fresh sounds.

This presentation was made possible by funding from the NYS Council on the Arts, the National Endowment for the Arts and the City of Troy as well as volunteer labor and small financial contributions from thousands of patrons of The Sanctuary for Independent Media.

Christine Salem Surprise Concert @ The Free School

Christine, Harry and David perform Maloya music, a traditional music from the island of Reunion, which is off the coast of Madagascar. It is sung in Réunion Creole, and accompanied by percussion instruments. It has origins in the music of slaves on the island, and was considered such a threat to the French state that in the 1970s it was banned. The kids at The Free School were treated to an impromtu concert thanks to the good folks at The Sanctuary for Independent Media.

Their performance was so invigorating and powerful and by the third song the kids could no longer contain themselves and the performance turned into a big dance party! After the show they also let the kids try out the percussion instruments.

Thank You So Much Christine, David & Henry for sharing your musical gifts with us and thank you Steve Pierce & Branda Miller from The Sanctuary For Independent Media for thinking of us!
